In 1972 the new XA GT was released and a GT-HO model was required to supersede the XY GT-HO on the race track. Three XAs were sent to Howard Marsden and his team at Ford Special Vehicles, Fords’s internal race division. Racing rules at the time dictated that 200 standard Phase IVs had to be produced into road going versions.
